The plot is really not that hard to understand. Cobb job is to steal ideas from people's minds, which is done in their dreams during dream-sharing. Cobb wants to go home to his children, but cannot because he has been accused of murdering his wife. By planting a dream in a persons mind, some powerful people will clear his name, so he can see his children again. Pretty simple.
The main problem with this movie is the plot holes and irregularities in the rules set up during the movie. Eg. what is the point to the architect? How can the dream devices be in the dreams whit-in a dream (did the architect put them there, and how. You can hear through many levels of dreaming, but not feel twisted gravity? Can people just fall a sleep on demand? etc. etc. etc.
Even if one did not care about plot holes, there is an even bigger problem with the movie! There are plots going on at the same time on four levels of dreaming. Because we have to jump back and forth all the time the plot loses its intensity and depth.
On the positive side, the movie has excellent acting and visuals. The idea is relatively original (cough the matrix, cough Tron, cough any worlds-within-another-word movies. Its good to see some new-thinking in Hollywood instead of crap like Transformers, sequels and remakes.
All together the movie is nothing but mediocre. Lets hope that The Expendables will live up to the hype, else this will have been a pretty bad action movie season.

I was pleasantly surprised at last one and proudly boasted in my review. now, I must give less credit when it's due. This version was over-rated and lost the magic previously developed. It could be bringing 2 unnecessary big name actors (DeVito and Glover) I don't believe they brought anything worthwhile to this sequel. Their parts could have been similarly performed by any other actors and maybe brought the same level of entertainment.
Just so glad that I saw this at a matinee where the previous movie, I saw in 3D which I never do. I applaud bringing back the original characters and ideally they could have brought the similar magic but it was not meant to be.

Seberg (Benedict Andrews) is an affair drama which is an interpretation of a real story. Combining the lead character's professional and personal roles, it explores her personal and relational lives.
Kristen Stewart gives a slightly contrite performance and she seems to have been once again typecast. Thankfully, the supporting cast are there with good performances to make up for the lack of personal connection with the main character. Unfortunately the excellent costume design is not enough to carry the film and will likely be overlooked.
Speaking after a screening at TIFF, the director explained the film is really a story of voyeurism; the addiction and danger of the watcher and watched. Even so, the excitement of surveillance is lost on an emotional contrived performance.

I speak very little Chinese, but I saw this film with my girlfriend (native speaker) at the cinema. She helped me understand plot points and certain dialogue that I was struggling with. This film is a great step in the right direction for the Chinese 3D animation industry, but in no way is it worthy of a 10/10. This film falls drastically short of the high bar set by films like those from Pixar.
The good:
-The landscapes and effects are bright and beautiful
-The voice acting is solid
-Some of the humor works even despite the language barrier
The bad:
-Most of the characters look like they're from different movies. The juxtaposition between young/transformed Nezha, his parents, the bad guy and the villagers just feels off. This film would benefit from more consistent character design.
-Some of the jokes are based more on Chinese meme culture, and as all of us know in the west, using memes in films is lazy pandering and sure to age very poorly.
-There are some emotional cliches regarding sacrifice and character reactions to events in the film. These things have been done a million times before and they are not exceptional here at the least.

All in all, I thought the film was decent. It was fun and looked a lot better than most 3D animation in China. But oh man are people riding the hype train on this one! It's really not a perfect or even great movie, but it is a step in the right direction. Hopefully Chinese films in the future will build off of this and produce films that are worthy of being called true classics, Chinese or worldwide.
